Improving Hygiene and the prudent use of antimicrobials

Antimicrobials are critical for animal health and productivity in agricultural systems worldwide. However, use of these antimicrobials on farms can also lead to the emergence, transmission, and persistence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). What’s more, these resistant microorganisms can also be transmitted to humans. To prevent this, proper biosecurity practices must be in place in farms along with prudent use of antimicrobials. Participants worked to develop behavioural solutions to both these problems. On one hand they worked to nudge farmers and labourers to use protective equipment and follow hygiene practices consistently. On the other, they used insights to nudge distributors of antimicrobials to offer advice on proper use of antimicrobials to farmers at the point of sale.
