Reducing Plastic Bottle Litter

Mexico is the main consumer of bottled water in the world, with eight out of every ten Mexicans regularly consuming it. In Mexico City alone, over 90 million PET bottles are discarded every year. One way to diminish plastic bottle litter would be to encourage consumers to use more sustainable ways of consuming water throughout the day, such as by carrying their own bottle and using water fountains. PUMAGUA, an NGO founded by one of Mexico’s most respected universities, was interested in finding out how behavioural insights could help. A diverse group of participants from six different institutions from around the country identified barriers and proposed interventions to crack this puzzle.
